While it offers many advantages such as communicating with friends, following the news, and discovering our interests, it can also cause serious harm without us realizing it. First of all, social media addiction negatively affects time management. People spend hours in front of screens, constantly checking notifications and neglecting their real-life responsibilities and social relationships. This situation negatively affects both individual productivity and social life.
Most of the content shared on social media presents idealized and perfect lives. When people compare their own lives with what they see online, psychological problems such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and loneliness may occur. Young people are especially more vulnerable to these comparisons, making them more exposed to the negative effects of social media. In addition, the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation can influence people’s thoughts and decisions, leading to false perceptions within society.
From a physical health perspective, social media also carries certain risks. Spending long periods in front of screens can cause eye strain, headaches, neck and back pain, and sleep disorders. Especially during nighttime, social media usage affects the melatonin hormone and reduces sleep quality. As a result, both mental and physical health can be negatively impacted.
Furthermore, the misuse of social media has serious effects on interpersonal communication. People may distance themselves from face-to-face interactions, lose empathy skills, and weaken their social abilities. Social media can easily polarize individuals and intensify online conflicts. This can negatively affect social relationships and emotional intelligence.
Considering all these effects, using social media consciously and in moderation is extremely important. Especially for teenagers and children, screen time should be controlled, quality content should be preferred, and time should be dedicated to real-life experiences. Social media can be a useful tool when used correctly; however, excessive and incorrect use can negatively affect both mental and physical health.
